Once upon a time (Photo)

Zindzi Azubuike puts her thoughts into a fairy tale poem, Feb. 2, 2019. (Not pictured.)

i like my sleeves long

my relationships short

for the same reason

more exposure

the more skin revealed

ample to be read between the lines

i thought loving stories

would paint me a sweet fantasy

but the tragedy is

i’m in love with fairy tales

knowing the brothers grimm love to spin a story

how it’s all too good to be true

that man will never be in love with you

so can we travel back in time

to the little girl

with wide eyes, short sleeves, flipping pages anxiously

does he get her back

does she get her happy ending

when in reality we’re grappling at straws

trying to piece together this mess of a life

it’s not a fairy tale

no prince charming is going to save you

thinking your kindness will be rewarded

you remain sweet when things go sour

there’s a tantric aura to you

that blinds your knight in shining armor

making him rabid, reckless, selfish

you kissed a prince and made him the beast

what a twisted tale this has become

as he morphed before your eyes

you stood idly letting it happen

watched in horror at what you loved

what you couldn’t stop loving

so you keep dancing with him

hoping he can twirl you into a better world

one where everything doesn’t end in hurt

one two three one two three

could he love me?

his claws scratch your waist where his hand rests

and even as blood stains your dress

it’s you who you blame

still swept up in his arms

didn’t even skip a beat when he changed

as if you knew

it was always too good to be true

i once kissed a prince

who then turned into a beast

that leaves no one to blame but me

to say the very least

I’ve accepted a sealed fate

to live with no happily ever after

to love with no prospects of everland

I signed away my happiness

when i turned to that last page and read

The End.
