Donate to the Gazette
Since 1906, the Gazette has served Western University’s campus, informing students and sharing important stories from across London — all funded entirely by student fees. But with the provincial government’s Student Choice Initiative, the fees that keep us operational are no longer mandatory, the Gazette, the is facing its most uncertain year yet.
On the record, we need your help.

In Cap And Gown FundOver 100 years ago, the Gazette went by a different name: In Cap and Gown.
But by any name, the Gazette has always been a training ground for journalists, ensuring that all students have a place to share their stories and learn how to share the stories of others’. The skills gained here serve them far and wide, preparing them for fields both within and without journalism. All who walk through our doors leave knowing more – knowing more about writing, interviewing, photography, videography, graphic design, and most importantly, being a storyteller.
The In Cap and Gown Fund will go toward keeping this dream alive, because although the Gazette, the campus, the students, and the province will grow and change, the need for journalism will remain constant. Training ethical and tenacious journalists has never been more important, and so a training ground we will remain. Your donations will go to ensure that essential parts of our training regimen continue:
- August training program
- Targeted training during school year
- Honoraria for staff
Since 1906 and beyond.

Maxinne Barker ScholarshipMaxinne Barker served as the Gazette Women’s Editor from 1942 to 1944 while attending Western.
After attaining her degree, she worked for the London Free Press and the Eastern Ontario Farmer newspaper as a journalist. Together with her husband, Henry Barker (BSc ’49), they raised five children. Maxinne died in 2003 at the age of 80 and left $10,000 to the Gazette.
This tremendous donation has become the basis of the Maxinne Barker Scholarship Fund, honouring Maxinne’s dedication to the Gazette and journalism. The fund pays out in the form of a scholarship to editors involved in the Gazette, offering financial assistance to one editor per year. If you'd like to support the scholarship as well as Maxinne's vision for a rewarding and encouraging career in journalism, please donate below.
